Customs data questions
Where does this customs data come from?
We aggregate bill-of-lading data from ImportYeti and Panjiva, which both maintain licensed datasets of US and global customs filings. We display counts, ports, and HS codes in aggregate; we do not resell raw records, consistent with both providers' ToS.
How current are the records?
Aluminum customs filings typically appear in our aggregate within 2-4 weeks of shipment. The data shown is always labeled with the most recent filing date we've ingested for that exporter.
Why should I check a supplier's customs record before ordering?
Customs records verify three things: (1) the mill actually ships internationally (not just a paper exporter), (2) they ship to your destination country / region, and (3) their claimed 'specialty' matches the HS codes they actually file. Mismatches are a major fraud flag.
